Frequently Asked Questions
Medical Examination
Each child must present evidence of receiving all required immunizations before admission into the school. Health forms are part of your registration packet and must be returned before your child begins school.
Illness
If your child becomes ill at school, you will be notified immediately. You will be asked to pick up your child as soon as possible. If your child has had a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, they must be symptom-free for at least 24 hours before returning to school. If your child has had an illness requiring a doctor's visit and medication, please follow the instructions from your doctor regarding their return to school.
Medication
The staff is not permitted to give medicine unless accompanied by specific directions from the physician prescribing the medication. Special forms provided by the Maryland State Office of Child Care are available at the school.
Worship
The children attend a simple weekly worship service designed for their age in the church. Teachers lead the service. All families are invited to attend.
Conferences
We have parent-teacher conferences twice a year for each child. If parents wish to discuss any problems that may arise during the year, we urge them to make an appointment with their child's teacher.
Daily Schedule
Beginning at 7:30 am, children are in their assigned classrooms. At 9:00 am, more focused activities start. Part-time 2’s and 3’s go home at noon. Lunch times for classrooms begin between 12:00 and 12:10, depending on the class. Nap time follows lunch for the Bumblebees, Dinosaurs, and Dolphins. The PreK 4's classroom continues activities until 2:00, when they lie down for a rest. Part-time 4s leave at 2:00 pm. The afternoon begins after 3:30 with a snack, more outside play, and small group activities until pickup time.
Late Pickup Policy
A failure to pick up at the proper closing time in ALL class schedules will result in a penalty fee of $5.00 per minute, payable directly to the staff in charge of your child that same day.
You must drop off by 10:00 am unless previous arrangements are made with your child’s lead teacher.
Naps
From approximately 1:30 to 3:30 pm, all children nap or rest quietly on their cots.
Lunch
The children bring their lunches from home. The school provides 1% or skim milk. The children may also drink water with their meals. Children have access to water on demand all day.
Discipline Policy
We believe that children learn by example; therefore, the adults (staff) will serve as positive role models. Children will be taught positive ways to interact with their peers. Children's emotions will be labeled, and they will learn acceptable ways to handle their feelings. Classrooms and schedules will be arranged to meet children's needs promptly. Rules will be consistent and enforced fairly.
Encouragement and praise will be the basis of our discipline. Children will be "caught" being good and be praised for it. Inappropriate behavior that can be tolerated will be ignored, and the staff will redirect the children whenever possible. When behavior is such that it cannot be tolerated, children will be spoken to calmly and given alternatives to the unacceptable behavior. If the child continues with the behavior, they will be given choices, warnings, and, eventually, consequences.
When a child exhibits aggressive behavior toward another child, they will be asked to sit in the “calm down corner” for no longer than 1 minute/year of age. The timeout will be within the view of the teacher. It will be made clear to the child the reason for their timeout. They will be asked to make amends to the other child by apologizing, getting a tissue for them, an ice pack, etc., and will be guided to see alternate ways of appropriately handling a situation.
The staff always helps a child to realize for herself that it was the behavior that was wrong. No child will be humiliated or made to feel bad about themselves. We do not use any form of verbal, physical, or emotional punishment.
