Medical Examination
Each child must present evidence of having received all required immunizations before admission into the school. Health forms are part of your registration packet and must be returned before your child begins school.
Illness
If your child becomes ill at school, you will be notified immediately. You will be asked to pick up your child as soon as possible. If your child has had a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, they need to be symptom free for at least 24 hours before returning to school. If your child has had an illness requiring a doctor's visit and medication, please follow the instructions from your doctor regarding their return to school.
Medication
The staff is not permitted to give medicine unless accompanied by specific directions from the physician prescribing the medication. Special forms provided by the Maryland State Office of Child Care for this purpose are available at the school.
Worship
The children attend a simple weekly worship service designed for their age in the church. The service is led by teachers and the Rector with class participation. All families are invited to attend.
Conferences
Midyear parent-teacher conferences will be scheduled for each child. If parents should wish to discuss any problems that may arise during the year, we urge them to make an appointment with their child's teacher.
Daily Schedule
Between 7:30-8:00 a.m. children gather in the front classroom together to play with other classmates. Beginning at 8:00, as other teachers arrive, children will begin leaving for their assigned classrooms. At 8:55 the part-time children begin to arrive, and the more focused activities begin. Part-time 2s and 3s go home at noon. Lunch times for classrooms begin between 12:00 and 12:45, depending on the class. Nap time follows lunch for the 2s and 3s. The preK 4's classroom continues activities until 2:00 when they lie down for rest time. Part-time 4s leave at 2:00 p.m. The afternoon begins after 3:30 with snack and more outside play, and small group activities until pick up time.
Late Pickup Policy
Our policy is that parents are charged $5/minute for each minute late they arrive after a 5 minute grace period. This fee is paid to the staff who are working. Timely pick-ups are appreciated, as our teachers have had long days with your children and are ready to go home to the rest of their lives.
Naps
The preschool children nap for approximately two hours each day from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Cots or mats are provided.
Lunch
The children bring their own lunches from home. Refrigerators are provided for the storage of meats and dairy foods. The school provides a mid-morning snack which is always accompanied by 1% milk, 100% NSA juice, or water. Children and access to water on demand all day.
Discipline Policy
We believe that children learn by example, therefore the adults (staff) will serve as positive role models. Children will be taught positive ways to interact with their peers. Children's emotions will be labeled and they will learn acceptable ways to handle their emotions. Classrooms and schedules will be arranged so that children's needs can be met in a timely fashion. Rules will be consistent and enforced fairly.
Encouragement and praise will be the basis of our discipline. Children will be "caught" being good and be praised for it. Inappropriate behavior that can be tolerated will be ignored and the staff will redirect the children whenever possible. When behavior is such that it cannot be tolerated, children will be spoken to calmly and given alternatives to the behavior that is unacceptable. If the child continues with the behavior they will be given a choices, warnings, and eventually a consequence.
When a child exhibits aggressive behavior toward another child they will be asked to sit in "timeout" for a period of not longer than 1 minute/year of age. It will be made clear to the child the reason for their timeout. The timeout will be within view of the teacher. They will be asked to make amends to the other child by apologizing, getting a tissue for them, ice pack, etc., and will be guided to see alternate ways of appropriately handling a situation.
The staff always helps a child to realize for herself that it was the behavior that was wrong. No child will be humiliated or made to feel badly about themselves. We do not use any form of verbal, physical, or emotional punishment.
